The Medway Today Recreation
For a very long time recreational opportunities have been available on the Medway and today recreation is one of the key features of the river.
Rather than disturb, the boat traffic and navigational locks all add to the atmosphere of this river and despite the years of industry, with freight moving up and down the Medway to London, today the Medway is often a very calm and relaxing place to spend a few hours with the convenience of still being close to town.
Perhaps you fancy a gentle stroll, want to try to photograph a passing flash of kingfisher before watching the barges navigate the locks. Perhaps you fancy a long distance route, linking our Medway Valley Walk with the Greensand Way, the North Down Way or the Wealdway. Or perhaps you want to give something back and volunteer to become a River Warden or a Heritage Ranger. Maybe you'd prefer to get on the water itself and try your hand at canoeing or rowing or maybe you want to improve your knowledge on a educational guided walk or event.
Whatever you fancy there are loads of recreational opportunities throughout the year in this area, be it a simple picnic at a country park, a nighttime walk of discovery or a boat trip. Take a look at the links to the right for some ideas and additional information.
In addition, we have Wildlife Spotter and Heritage Spotter Guides plus many self guided walking routes available to download. See the links from the Walking section or from the Home Page. We also have an Environmental Education Pack for you to download, which will give you many additional ideas for fun outdoor children's games. See the Activities page for more details.
